Best PlayStation Plus Deals: Save on Essential, Plus and Premium

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is one of the biggest consoles of the generation, and we’re not just talking in terms of sales or game releases. Much like the PlayStation 4, it’s taken a while for the PS5 to take its stride, but it finally has a great lineup of games that are worth checking out. Of course, one big downside to consoles like the PS5 is that, unlike a gaming PC where you can connect to multiplayer servers without an issue, you have to have a subscription service, in this case, called PlayStation Plus. It’s not all bad, though, since there are some tiers that give you access to a large PS games library and a few other perks, so it’s worth grabbing for more reasons than just access to online content.

What is PlayStation Plus?

Along with online multiplayer and other in-game network features, a PlayStation Plus Essential membership grants you access to exclusive discounts and other promotions. Perhaps the most notable benefit of PlayStation Plus is that every month, Sony gives subscribers one PlayStation 5 and two PlayStation 4 games that are free to download. You have one month to add these free PlayStation Plus games to your library.

After that, these titles are yours to keep so long as you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription. The free-to-download games are generally pretty good (they are often some of the best PS4 games that have been out for a little while), and these alone justify the cost of PS Plus even for people who don’t do a lot of online gaming.

If your membership lapses, you lose access to these games; however, you can download them again if you re-activate your PS Plus account. In other words, you don’t need to worry about losing your free games if you decide to go without PS Plus for a while (or if you just forget to add more time to your subscription) — once they are in your library, these free PlayStation Plus titles are yours to play whenever you have an active PS Plus membership. Just note that you may only add them to your library during the month that they are free.

If you want more from your PlayStation Plus membership, there’s also PlayStation Plus Extra. This service gives you all the benefits of PS Plus Essential as well as a downloadable catalog of nearly 400 PS4 and PS5 games.

Not enough for you? There’s always PlayStation Plus Premium which does all that, and adds on PS3 game streaming for select titles) along with some PS1, PS2 and PSP games too. It’s more limited than anyone would like but there are some good titles like Ape Escape, Tekken 2, and Dark Cloud.

In all cases, there’s also access to PS Plus Collection — a roundup of some of the best games seen on PS4 such as The Last of Us Remastered, God of War, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. This won’t be for long though with Sony discontinuing the library from May 9. Fortunately, if you download any of these games before then, they’re yours to keep unless your PS Plus subscription lapses. It’s a great way of gaining insight into what Sony has to offer but you’re going to need to be fast, making one of these PlayStation Plus deals even more unmissable right now.

PlayStation Plus Membership

PlayStation Plus Essential is the new name for what was previously known simply as PlayStation Plus. The main purpose of signing up for the service is to access the online modes of your favorite games, though there are added bonuses such as free games to download every month. You’ll be able to keep playing these games as long as your PlayStation Plus Essential membership remains active, or you decide to upgrade to the higher tiers — PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium.

Sadly, there aren’t any deals going for any of the subscriptions at the moment so you’ll have to grab a subscription directly from Sony.

If you've always wanted to pick up a gaming console but have been putting it off for prices to get a bit better, now is the perfect time to pick something up. With many great Xbox Series S and X deals, PlayStation 5 deals, and Nintendo Switch deals to pick from, you can grab something for a relatively cheap price. To that end, we've gone out and collected some of our favorite deals below, including both new and refurbished options where available.
Xbox Series S 1TB -- starting at $330, was $380

The Xbox Series S is the less powerful but cheaper option out of the newest generation Xbox line. When comparing the Xbox Series S versus the Xbox Series X, the Series S takes a hit in all the component categories. That means it's not quite as fast. But if you're not hung up on getting the optimal performance out of your system, you'll actually notice very few differences. The two biggest ones are the Series S's inability to play in 8K, and its lack of a disc drive. Most people don't even have 8K TVs, so that shouldn't be an issue. If you're alright with downloading all of your games straight to the console's memory (and you have a separate DVD or Blu-Ray player), the Series S will work fine. It's quite a bit smaller anyway, and easier to fit on a shelf.

There are a lot of great consoles out there, but few have made as much of an impact on gaming as Sony's PlayStation. Even so, the latest iteration, the PlayStation 5, was a bit of a hit and a miss when it first came out, especially since there were issues with getting stock, and the PS4 still felt relatively fresh. Since then, the PS5 has become much better as a gaming console, with a lot more first-party titles, better availability, and even lower cost. To that end, if you want to grab yourself a PS5, or PS5 games, then Sony's Days of Play event is the perfect time to pick up a bunch of cool stuff, and we've listed some of our favorite deals below.
God of War Ragnarök -- $40, was $70

God of War is one of the oldest and most popular franchises, not only on PlayStation but also in gaming overall, and God of War Ragnarök is the latest installment. It may be a couple of years old now, but if you haven't had a chance to play it, now is the perfect time to pick it up, especially if you finished the first God of War remake that was launched with the PS5. While the story isn't as strong, the combat and gameplay are much better, and exploration is a lot of fun.
