Visa-Free Access Impact

Turkey’s policy of visa-free and e-visa to 107 countries has significantly bolstered its travel and tourism sector. This initiative simplifies leisure travel and enhances business travel, meetings, and events. As a result, international visitors are flocking to Turkey for various purposes, from vacations to attending high-profile business conferences and cultural events. This diversity in travel intent has invigorated multiple facets of Turkey’s tourism industry. Airlines are experiencing increased bookings, hotel occupancy rates are surging, and the event industry is seeing a higher demand for venues and services. This policy is driving multifaceted growth across all travel and tourism-related sectors, solidifying Turkey’s status as a versatile and attractive global destination.

Tourism Recovery and Growth

The tourism sector experienced a remarkable rebound, with the total number of travelers soaring to 30 million in 2021, recovering from the pandemic-induced drop to 16 million in 2020. By 2023, this figure had surged to an unprecedented 56.7 million inbound tourists, setting a new record.

Key Source Markets

Russia emerged as Turkey’s top source of inbound tourism in the same year, with over 6.3 million visitors. Germany followed closely, contributing approximately 6.2 million tourists, while the United Kingdom added around 3.8 million tourists.

Tourist Expenditure

Visitor spending in Turkey has also seen fluctuations. In 2023, visitors spent an average of 952 U.S. dollars each, a slight increase from the pandemic-impacted 2020. The peak of spending was reached in 2021, with an average outlay surpassing 1,000 U.S. dollars per person.

Economic Impact and Airport Traffic

In 2024, Turkey’s Travel & Tourism industry achieved unprecedented success, as highlighted by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR). The sector made a remarkable economic contribution of TRY 3.11 trillion, constituting 12% of the nation’s GDP, representing a 30% increase compared to the previous high recorded in 2019. Furthermore, Istanbul Airport emerged as the busiest in the nation, managing the transit of over 76.2 million passengers in 2023. Sabiha Gökçen International Airport also reported significant traffic, handling more than 37 million passengers during the same year.

Mastercard Report on Foreign Card Transactions

According to the latest Mastercard report, foreign card transactions in Turkey continued to grow in the first quarter of 2024, covering the January-March period. Turnover-based growth, which was 12% in the same period of 2023, was 7%, and quantity-based growth/number of visitors, which was 1%, was 16%. When examining the country-based distribution of individual foreign card payments in Turkey, spending with UK-based cards maintained its top position, while Egyptian-based cards set a growth record compared to the previous year. According to the report, the top five countries with the highest spending (turnover) through foreign cards in Turkey were the UK (17%), Germany (12%), the USA (6%), Saudi Arabia (5%), and the Netherlands (4%).

RSVP Symposium in Istanbul

The train will carry 140 passengers on its 1,262-kilometer journey, which will take approximately 28 hours and feature a unique travel experience aimed at enhancing Turkey’s tourism sector.
