This story is part of our Summer Gaming Marathon series.

What may be one of the last Nintendo Direct presentations entirely focused on the Nintendo Switch is here. With Nintendo still not ready to talk about its popular platform’s successor just yet, there are still plenty of Switch games on the way. We already know about titles like Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD and Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, but the back half of 2024 for the Switch is still a mystery. Hopefully, Nintendo and its third-party partners deliver and show us some awesome games.

After this Nintendo Direct, we should have a pretty clear idea of what to expect from the Nintendo Switch ahead of whatever comes next. As such, this is an important presentation for Nintendo fans. A lot will be shown over the course of the 40-minute Direct, so to help you keep track of all of it, we’re doing a live recap of every announcement made during the June 2024 Nintendo Direct right here.

The Mario & Luigi series returns with Brothership

Mario & Luigi: Brothership – Announcement Trailer – Nintendo Switch

Nintendo’s Mario & Luigi series had been on hiatus since developer Alpha Dream closed, but it’s finally making a comeback. Mario & Luigi: Brothership kicked off this Nintendo Direct with a trailer that showed a mix of cinematics, conversations, and gameplay. It looks to once again be an RPG where players control Mario and Luigi, whose actions are mapped to different buttons. Mario & Luigi: Brothership will be released on November 7.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake gives an NES classic a beautiful overhaul

Square Enix first teased an HD-2D remake of NES RPG classic Dragon Quest III several years ago, but we hadn’t seen it in action again until now. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will launch for Nintendo Switch on November 14. We also learned that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is also in the works and will come out sometime in 2025.

Nintendo’s next game is all about mastering NES classics
The physical version of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition.

Nintendo has announced Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, a new game coming out this July that tests players' speedrunning skills in NES classics like Super Mario Bros. and Metroid.

A successor of sorts to the NES Remix games on Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition draws its name from a gaming competition Nintendo held in 1990 and then briefly again in the 2010s. Its reveal trailer features previous Nintendo World Championship contestants musing about the event, only to learn that it's returning in video game form.

Nintendo confirms that Switch 2 and a June Direct are coming
A Nintendo Switch Red and Blue system.

Nintendo has finally confirmed two important things that people were speculating about. First off, we learned that another Nintendo Direct showcase will be taking place this June. More importantly, Nintendo finally confirmed that it is working on a Nintendo Switch successor and said we'd learn more about it within this fiscal year.

This all came from a statement by President Shuntaro Furukawa on Nintendo's corporate X (formerly Twitter) account. "We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015," the post confirms. "We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation."
