Tesla Powerwall energy storage systems to integrate with Octopus Energy's Kraken platform, allowing customers to access smart tariff payments
Two of the biggest names in clean technology have announced a new partnership that promises a further boost to the fast expanding market for smart tariffs and flexible grid services.
Octopus Energy and Tesla yesterday confirmed the Tesla Powerwall energy storage system is now integrated with Octopus' Kraken platform, which automatically manages energy use to help balance the grid during periods of peak demand.
The integration should make it possible for Powerwall customers to maximise earnings by drawing cheap, clean energy from the grid when it is most abundant, and unloading onto the grid at peak times, with the process fully automated by the Kraken platform.
The integration also means Powerwall customers can access Octopus Energy's range of smart tariffs, including its 'Intelligent Octopus Flux'. The tariff is designed to maximise customers' earnings by responding flexibly to prices throughout the day - charging their batteries when prices are low and selling when they are high to support the grid during peak periods - saving average customers £250 a year compared to a standard import and export tariff.
The partnership is a further boost to Octopus' growing role as a provider of flexible grid services, with Kraken now managing over 1GW of shiftable power through a range of connected devices.
As part of the partnership Octopus is now also certified to install the Tesla Powerwall in Spain and the UK.
"Two energy tech giants are coming together to get the most out of clean tech in people's homes," said Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, chief product and marketing officer at Octopus Energy. "Now that Powerwall is integrated into Kraken, it will pass on further savings for customers while helping to balance the grid."
Colby Hastings, director of residential energy at Tesla, said the integration between Powerwall and Kraken would "increase value for homeowners while maintaining an excellent product experience".
"We are excited to collaborate with Octopus as we work towards powering the grid of the future," he added.
