The hassle of carrying cash and the struggle for exact change on buses are soon to be relics of the past. In a significant step towards modernizing public transport, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to introduce electronic ticketing machines (ETMs) across its bus fleet within the next two months. These advanced devices will enable passengers to pay using Unified Payments Interface (UPI), debit and credit cards, and other cashless modes. This innovation not only simplifies the payment process for both passengers and conductors but also promises to enhance the overall travel experience.

Digital Transformation in KSRTC: A New Era

KSRTC has embarked on a digital transformation journey, starting with the implementation of ETMs. This move is designed to resolve the perennial issue of exact change and streamline transactions. Passengers will soon be able to pay seamlessly through digital platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy emphasizes that this initiative aligns with KSRTC’s broader goal to adopt digital solutions, thereby improving service quality and reducing cash-related disputes.

EbixCash Ltd. and the ITMS Contract

Recently, KSRTC awarded a long-term contract to EbixCash Ltd. to implement an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS). This comprehensive system will revolutionize bus operations by integrating ETMs and digital payment solutions. EbixCash will be responsible for the development and deployment of these systems, starting with the installation of 10,245 ETMs across 8,000 buses, with plans to expand this network further.

Streamlined Operations and Cashless Payments

The introduction of the ITMS is a landmark shift towards fully automated fare collection. This system not only addresses the long-standing demand for cashless bus ticketing but also enhances operational efficiency. The deployment of ETMs will ensure passengers can enjoy a frictionless travel experience, free from the inconvenience of cash payments.

Smart Cards for Shakti Scheme Beneficiaries

KSRTC is also considering the integration of smart cards for Shakti scheme beneficiaries. Although the issuance of these smart cards has been delayed, they are expected to be incorporated into the new ETM system, further expanding the cashless payment options available to passengers.

Broader Impacts on Public Transport

Currently, only Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses, especially those servicing the airport, accept cashless payments. The expansion of ETMs across KSRTC’s fleet will significantly enhance the accessibility and convenience of public transport across Karnataka. This initiative is particularly welcomed by regular passengers who have long been advocating for cashless options.

Passenger Perspectives

Passengers like Harsha Kumar and Ravi Prasad highlight the daily inconveniences of needing cash for bus fares. The introduction of ETMs is a long-awaited solution that will simplify travel for countless commuters. Kumar appreciates the shift towards cashless payments, and Prasad anticipates the elimination of frustrating situations related to obtaining change.

A Step Towards Modernized Travel

The introduction of ETMs by KSRTC marks a pivotal moment in the modernization of public transport in Karnataka. By embracing digital payment methods, KSRTC is setting a new standard for convenience and efficiency in bus travel. This initiative not only addresses the immediate concerns of cash handling but also aligns with broader efforts to digitize and improve public services. As the ETMs are rolled out, passengers can look forward to a seamless and hassle-free travel experience.
