Reading Time: 2 minutesThis summer, an expected influx of Over thousands of England fans is set to travel to Germany for the Euro 2024 championship, beginning with their team’s first match against Serbia on Sunday evening. The final of the Euro Cup 2024 is slated for July 14th in Berlin.
England captain Harry Kane has set the bar high for his team, stating they would be let down by anything less than clinching the championship title.
Thousands of fans are expected in Gelsenkirchen, western Germany, to support their team in their first Group C match.
England’s manager Gareth Southgate has encouraged fans to make the most of their time in Germany, despite local authorities marking the Serbia match on Sunday as “high-risk” due to recent incidents involving Serbian ultras in the area.
Charity fundraiser Russ Cook, also known as Hardest Geezer, is slated to attend after completing a 352-mile run from Wembley Stadium starting on Tuesday.
The endurance athlete previously captured attention with a charity run across Africa, completing an impressive journey of over 10,000 miles in April, which took 352 days.
On June 20, a day before his 42nd birthday, the Prince of Wales will join supporters at Frankfurt Arena to watch England’s second game against Denmark, led by Gareth Southgate. Meanwhile, Scotland has also qualified, with a significant number of Tartan Army fans traveling to Germany to support their team against the hosts on Friday.
The Foreign Office anticipates that up to 500,000 British fans will travel to Germany during the tournament to support their teams.
Scottish midfielder Callum McGregor noted that the team’s next opponents are likely to be aggressive following Scotland’s 5-1 defeat by Germany, which subdued the previously “phenomenal” atmosphere that First Minister John Swinney had remarked on while accompanying fans in Munich.
As football fans prepare to watch the games from home, supermarkets are gearing up for one of their busiest times of the year. Tesco anticipates selling 33 million packs of beer and cider over the next month, with a record-breaking 5.5 million bottles and cans of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol options also expected to be sold during this major football tournament.
Wine sales are projected to exceed 30 million bottles, accompanied by over 11 million pies and more than 90,000 packs of bunting. However, UK police have issued a warning about the potential increase in domestic abuse linked to excessive drinking during the tournament.
Research from Lancaster University, cited by the National Police Chiefs’ Council, indicates a 38% increase in domestic violence incidents when England loses a game and a 26% rise when they win, based on data from 2002 to 2010.
In response, the women’s aid charity Solace and the National Centre for Domestic Violence have launched the “Shirt 38” campaign, featuring an alternative England kit to promote awareness and support for those experiencing domestic abuse during the Euros, as part of their “No More Injury Time” initiative.
