NEET UG 2024 SC Hearing: Scores of 1,563 candidates invalidated

NEET UG 2024: The Supreme Court of India Thursday June 13, 2024 acknowledged the Union Government's declaration that scorecards of 1,563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates, who received grace marks, will be invalidated.

These candidates will now have two options – either agree to their NEET UG 2024 score without the grace marks based on the May 05, 2024 exam OR appear for the NEET UG re-exam to be held on June 23, 2024.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is likely to issue a NEET UG 2024 re-exam notification for these 1,563 students by today evening. The NTA will declare the result of the NEET re-exam on June 30, 2024.

No stay on NEET UG 2024 Counselling

During th hearing, the Supreme Court of India declined to stay the medical admission counselling based on NEET UG 2024 score.

The NTA accordingly submitted that the NEET UG Counselling will start from July 06, 2024.

NEET UG 2024 was conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 05, 2024. Close to 24 lakh students from India and abroad appeared for the entrance exams mandatory for admission in MBBS, BUMS, BHMS and other undergraduate medical courses.

The NTA declared the NEET result on June 04, 2024. Along with the result, the NTA also published the NEET UG toppers list according to which a total of 67 students scored 100% marks i.e. 720 out of the total 720 marks.

The NEET exam this year was marred by the allegations of paper leak, malpractice, and irregularities. The Gujarat Police also busted a NEET exam racket which promised to help the students pass the exam in return of money.

The NEET UG toppers list added to the dissent and sparked nation-wide protest as among the 67 NEET toppers were six from the same centre.

The NTA refuted all these allegations and claimed the exam was held in a fair and transparent manner.

Regarding the grace marks, the NTA centre it was granted to the 1,563 candidates to compensate loss of time.

To further satisfy the candidates, the Ministry of Education also formed a 4-member panel headed by former UPSC chairman to probe the alleged irregularities in the NEET exam.

The matter reached the Supreme Court with some of petitioners calling it a "NEET Scam" and demanding cancellation of the May 5 NEET exam and holding a re-exam for all the students.

The Ministry of Education however submitted in the Supreme Court that NEET re-exam will be held only for 1,563 students.

NEET UG toppers reduced to 61

Meanwhile, the number of NEET UG toppers will be revised to 61 as against the earlier 67. This is after the grace marks awarded to the 6 students of the same centre in Haryana who scored 100% marks have been invalidated.

These students can regain their top spot and AIR 1 rank if they re-appear in the NEET exam and score 100% marks, the NTA said.

"Six out of these 1,563 candidates shared the first rank with 61 others. The number of top rankers will now go down from 67 to 61," a senior National Testing Agency (NTA) official said.

"Unless these candidates take a retest and score 720 out of 720, they will not regain their top spot", the official said.

The NTA conducts NEET UG entrance exam every year for admission in MBBS (medical), BDS (dental), BUMS, BHMS and BAMS (AYUSH Courses) and Paramedical courses.

The medical admission counselling is conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for 15% India Quota seats and by various states for the remaining 85% seats.
