The U.S. House has passed the No Hidden FEES Act, supported by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, to ensure transparent lodging fee displays.

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the No Hidden FEES Act, an important piece of legislation advocated for by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) that aims to promote clarity in lodging prices for consumers.

This new law would create a uniform requirement for clear and obligatory display of fees across various accommodation services including short-term rental platforms, online travel agencies, metasearch websites, and hotels.

The proposal, co-sponsored by Rep. Young Kim (R-Calif.) and Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), received unanimous endorsement from the House Energy & Commerce Committee in December and garnered cross-party support during its passage on the House floor today.

“It makes sense for all lodging businesses – from short-term rentals to online travel agencies, metasearch sites, and hotels – to tell guests up front about mandatory fees. That’s why AHLA has led efforts supporting federal legislation to establish a single and transparent standard for mandatory lodging fee displays and an even competitive playing field,” said AHLA Interim President & CEO Kevin Carey. “Thanks to Reps. Kim and Castor, we’re one step closer to making this a reality. We will continue to work with Senators Klobuchar and Moran on passing their related legislation in the Senate, with the goal of establishing a uniform standard across the industry as law.”

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) is dedicated to establishing a unified requirement for the mandatory disclosure of fees throughout the lodging sector, including short-term rentals, online travel agencies, metasearch websites, and traditional hotel operations. This advocacy is part of their ongoing efforts to ensure the final bill reflects this standard.

The proposed No Hidden FEES Act (H.R. 6543) in the House, alongside its Senate counterpart, the Hotel Fees Transparency Act (S. 2498) introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), aims to set a uniform standard for fee transparency across the entire lodging industry.

Recent statistics from the AHLA indicate that only 6% of hotels across the country impose a mandatory resort, destination, or amenity fee, with an average cost of $26 per night.
