Reading Time: 2 minutesThe Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), an extension of the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), is thrilled to announce the grand opening event “Korea Center New York Opening Celebration: Masters & Masterpieces.” This premiere will feature a performance by the National Gugak Center on Saturday, June 29th, at 7:30 pm, at 122 E 32nd Street, New York, NY 10016.
This inaugural event celebrates the launch of KCCNY’s new premises, showcasing a lineup of 25 renowned artists from Korea’s leading institution for gugak, the traditional Korean music genre.
The event consists of three vibrant segments, each highlighting the unique charm and elegance of Korean traditional performing arts. It begins with “Blessings for Prosperity for the New Building,” a segment featuring the Mun-gut and Taepyeongmu rituals, which are steeped in symbolism and invoke well-being and good fortune. This is followed by “Wishing for Friendship and Harmonious US-Korea Partnership,” which combines the timeless Suryongeum and Newly-Sinawi, melding traditional tunes with contemporary improvisation to signify unity and shared values. The concluding segment, “Sounds of Hope from the Present to the Future,” melds the iconic Arirang melody with the energetic beats of Samulnori, illustrating a connection from today’s hopes to a bright future.
Esteemed musicians and performers from the National Gugak Center will illustrate the profound and dynamic aspects of Korean culture, commemorating this landmark occasion for KCCNY and promoting deeper cultural ties between the U.S. and South Korea.
