Union minister Giriraj Singh has officially taken charge of India’s Ministry of Textiles, with the formal handover from former Union minister of textiles Piyush Goyal. Pabitra Margherita, a Rajya Sabha member elected from the Margherita legislative constituency in Assam, also took charge as minister of state in the Ministry of Textiles.

Rachna Shah, secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, along with other senior officials, was present to witness the occasion.

In a gesture of goodwill, former Minister Piyush Goyal presented a bouquet to Margherita in the presence of union minister Giriraj Singh, the Ministry of Textiles said in a press release.

“Textiles sector has huge employment opportunities. The industry also holds a large share in terms of global exports as well,” said Singh on the occasion of assuming charge.

In a statement today, the chairman of the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil), Sunil Patwari, welcomed the appointment of Giriraj Singh as the new Union minister for Textiles and Pabitra Margherita as the minister of state for Textiles.

Patwari said that Texprocil looks forward to receiving the wholehearted support of the newly appointed ministers in making the textile industry more vibrant not only through an increase in exports but also by generating employment for the entire textile value chain. He further hoped that under the new minister’s dynamic leadership, many of the issues pertaining to the cotton textile sector will be taken up on priority and resolved.
