3 underrated movies on Max you need to watch in June 2024

While Max‘s lineup of movies isn’t quite as impressive as it used to be, it still has a number of films that are worth getting excited about. That’s especially true when it comes to the movies of the last 20 years, which have been buried by the seemingly endless barrage of streaming films. Now, it’s almost impossible to watch every new release, which only makes it more important to remember the underrated movies of the past before they’re completely forgotten.

This month’s picks for the three underrated movies on Max that you need to watch in June include one of Julia Roberts’ best rom-coms, a horror remake that really delivers, and a comic book action film that has some serious star power.

America’s Sweethearts (2001)

Sony Pictures Releasing

The title characters of America’s Sweethearts are Gwen Harrison (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Eddie Thomas (John Cusack), a pair of movie stars who used to be in love. Now, Gwen has left Eddie for Hector Gorgonzolas (The Simpsons star Hank Azaria), and their last movie together is an unmitigated disaster.

PR veteran Lee Phillips (Billy Crystal) has the bright idea to save the film by convincing the public that Eddie and Gwen have g0tten back together. The reality, however, is that Eddie is starting to realize that he’s in love with Gwen’s sister, Kathleen “Kiki” Harrison (Julia Roberts), and the feeling is mutual. However, Kiki has lived in her sister’s shadow for years, and the artificial nature of Hollywood may keep her and Eddie from getting together.

Evil Dead (2013)

Jane Levy in Evil Dead.
Sony Pictures

The reason why we’re so excited to see Alien: Romulus this summer is because it’s directed by Fede Álvarez, the man who made the remake of Evil Dead into one of the best horror movies of the last two decades. Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead is a classic, and yet, Álvarez outdid the original by imbuing his film with genuine intensity and terror.

Jane Levy stars in the remake as Mia Allen, a young woman who is attempting to kick her heroin addiction with the help of her brother, David Allen (Shiloh Fernandez), as well as their friends, Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci), Olivia (Jessica Lucas), and Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore). The problem is that they decided to hold Mia’s detox at a remote cabin in the woods, where something evil awaits. Mia is the first to feel its dark influence, but she won’t be the last.

Wanted (2008)

The cast of Wanted.
Universal Pictures

Wanted has very little in common with Mark Millar and J. G. Jones’ comic book that inspired it, and that’s probably for the best. Director Timur Bekmambetov and the screenwriters almost completely reshaped the plot from following a fraternity of supervillains to a group of assassins who are guided to eliminate people that are fated to bring evil into the world.

James McAvoy stars as Wesley Gibson, an office worker whose best friend, Barry (Chris Pratt), is seeing his girlfriend, Cathy (Kristen Hager), behind his back. Once Fox (Angelina Jolie) takes Wesley under her wing, he learns how to become an assassin in order to avenge his father and take out his killer, Cross (Thomas Kretschmann). Unfortunately for Wesley, he’s been misled. And now the assassins are coming after him.
