After leaving Saturday’s loss early due to knee soreness and sitting out Sunday’s finale in Chicago, Rafael Devers is back in the Red Sox lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Devers will be joined by designated hitter Masataka Yoshida, who was activated Tuesday as well, and the Phillies are also down another one of their best players.
The Phillies, who own the National League’s best record at 45-20, announced prior to the game that star catcher J.T. Realmuto is being placed on the 10-day injured list and is scheduled to undergo surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus. The three-time All-Star will be out indefinitely, marking the latest blow for a club that is also currently without shortstop Trea Turner and outfielder Brandon Marsh.
In addition to Devers and Yoshida, the Red Sox will also start David Hamilton at shortstop and bat the rookie second in the order. Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Rob Refsnyder will play left, center and right field, respectively, and Connor Wong is slated to catch.
Kutter Crawford (2-5, 3.51), who has posted an 8.27 ERA over his last three starts, will look to stop his recent skid when he faces Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler (7-3, 2.23), who has ranked as one of baseball’s top starters for at least the last five seasons.
