Obituary: Richard Nelson Graves

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Richard Nelson Graves,beloved husband, father and grandfather. Richard,age 90, passed away peacefully May 19, 2024 in Prescott, Arizona. Richard (Rick) was born August 29, 1933 to Ralph and Mildred Graves in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Rick grew up in Geneva, New York and loved the summers he spent with Uncle Harry in Florida.
He created many memories and stories that he shared over the years.
In 1954 he met and married Lorraine Smith. Setting out with everything they owned in their car; they headed west to Colorado. Living first in Colorado Springs and eventually settling in Aspen.
It was here they raised their four children: Kitty, Valorie, Matthew and Susan.
Rick found his true calling as a master carpenter, but before that he sold life insurance up and down the Aspen Valley. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club which he took great pride in,
even serving as President at one point.
In 1972 Rick and Lorraine divorced and in 1974 he met Ruth Slowinski and her three-year-old daughter, Rachel, who Rick later adopted. In 1975 Rick, Ruth and Rachel moved to Pitkin,
Colorado for the opportunity of selling and building real estate for the next five years.
After a brief time in Michigan from 1980-1984, Rick, Ruth and Rachel found their home in Prescott, Arizona. This is where he called home and found a lot of solace and peace with
his family, friends and neighborly community.
Most of all Rick’s presence will be deeply missed. He was a patient and kind man, always willing to lend a hand and an ear. He loved his family, friends and neighbors unconditionally.
He was especially proud of all his children and their accomplishments. His legacy will live on in all those who knew him. We love you Rick, Dad and Grandpa!!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Mildred Graves, brother Raleigh Graves and sister Nancy Littrell.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 49 years Ruth. His five children, Kitty (Bob) Looper, Valorie (Ken) Bogner, Matthew (Colleen) Graves, Susan Day and Rachel Robertson.
Ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 1-3pm at 231 S. Mt. Vernon Ave., Prescott, Arizona. Please feel free to join us and share your memories of Rick.
