Move over Helldivers 2. A Starship Troopers game is coming to consoles

Helldivers 2 is one of 2024’s breakout gaming hits, but it’s finally getting some competition from the franchise it is heavily inspired by. Offworld’s Starship Troopers: Extermination, a co-op shooter based on the satirical sci-fi franchise, will exit early access on PC and launch for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S this October.

Starship Troopers: Extermination originally entered early access on Steam in May 2023 and is a co-op first-person shooter that supports up to 16 players. Helldivers 2 definitely stole a bit of its thunder, but this officially licensed Starship Troopers game does stand out because of its first-person gameplay perspective, character classes, and light base-building elements. While hardcore Helldivers 2 fans on PS5 and PC might not want to switch games, this finally gives Xbox players a game that’s somewhat similar to Sony’s multiplayer hit to check out.

Another way in which Starship Troopers: Extermination will stand out from Helldivers 2 is that it will have a single-player mode. This will consist of 25 unique PvE levels and follow a spec ops group commanded by General Johnny Rico. Offworld even got actor Casper Van Dien, who portrays Rico in the Starship Troopers films, to reprise his role for the game. Offworld also plans to expand the game’s single-player offerings post-launch.

Starship Troopers: Extermination will be released for the first time on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S and exit early access on PC on October 11. It will retail for $50 and get a physical release. This also isn’t the only PC game making the jump to consoles this October, as Amazon’s New World will also be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S that month.

The CEO for Arrowhead Games, developer of Helldivers 2, caught some flak for a controversial take on nowhere else than X (formerly Twitter), saying that Nvidia's DLSS is "cool tech, but not necessary."

The lack of branded upscaling tools in Helldivers 2 is strange, especially given the fact that the title has quickly become "one of the most entertaining co-op games" of the year, as you can read about in our Helldivers 2 review. Thankfully, Helldivers 2 doesn't need DLSS.

Helldivers 2 has been the surprise hit of February, but it has also been surprisingly hard to get into the game. Server issues are frequent, and while Arrowhead Game Studios is actively working to resolve these issues, Helldivers 2’s online experience is far from perfect. If you’re frustrated at not being able to play Helldivers 2, but want to play something similar, there’s another fantastic option.

I’m not referencing the similar titles on Xbox Game Pass. I’m referring to the original Helldivers. First released on PC, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita in 2015, Helldivers is a game that I did not think much of before this month, as I only put about 15 minutes into it after getting the game as a monthly PS Plus title in 2016. Returning to it in the wake of my enjoyment of Helldivers 2, I found much of the charm of the sequel is present in its predecessor, albeit in isometric shooter form.

With the launches of Helldivers 2, Nightingale, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Foamstars, and Skull & Bones, February 2024 has been packed with new multiplayer games planned to have live service tails.

They have all released to varying degrees of success. Warner Bros. and analysts have suggested that Suicide Squad underperformed, while an Insider Gaming report claimed the same about Skull & Bones. On the other hand, games like Nightingale and Helldivers 2 have garnered much more interest from players.
