As World Oceans Day nears, Beyond Green amplifies its dedication to ocean conservation with eco-friendly stays, fostering marine research, and sustainable tourism across 18 countries.

As World Oceans Day approaches on June 8, Beyond Green is stepping up its commitment to safeguarding the oceans, which are vital for sustaining life on Earth. This global collection of some of the world’s most eco-friendly accommodations underscores the daily opportunities for ocean conservation. Through partnerships with its properties, Beyond Green is at the forefront of fostering understanding and effective measures for protecting marine ecosystems.

Though only a fraction of the ocean has been explored, the detrimental effects of human activities, such as plastic pollution and ocean warming, are evident. Beyond Green enables travelers to find and book hotel experiences that are both inspiring and environmentally responsible. Each property is meticulously evaluated against more than 50 sustainability criteria that adhere to international tourism norms and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Representing 18 countries across six continents, Beyond Green’s properties are dedicated to the core principles of sustainable tourism: Nature, Culture, and Community. This ensures their role in protecting the environment for future generations while offering outstanding experiences to their guests.

“World Oceans Day is an important reminder that the health of our oceans is essential to the wellbeing of all life on earth and is critical in the ongoing fight against climate change,” said Nina Boys, Vice President of Sustainability for Beyond Green. “Today, the ocean is increasingly under threat and urgent action and collaborative solutions are needed to protect it for future generations, which is why Beyond Green is proud to represent sustainable tourism leaders around the world that support marine biodiversity, restore underwater ecosystems, and foster the wellbeing of coastal communities through impactful initiatives and partnerships tied to ocean stewardship.”

Properties within the Beyond Green network are pioneering transformative actions for vital environmental shifts through pioneering ocean research, dynamic community alliances, and immersive educational ventures. These activities enhance guests’ insights and connectivity to the marine ecosystem and the effects of human behavior. Notable initiatives include:

At The Brando in Tetiaroa, French Polynesia, the resort embodies Marlon Brando’s vision of a “university of the sea” by leading advanced oceanic research to preserve the local marine life. Key endeavors encompass the evaluation of ecological shifts following rat eradication and their influences on coral reef health, extensive seascape ecology surveys, and long-term studies on the lagoon’s shark population and green sea turtle nesting, in addition to testing innovative methods to bolster coral resilience against climate change using the resort’s Seawater Air-Conditioning system outflow.

The Parkside Hotel & Spa in Victoria, British Columbia, engages in ocean conservation through its partnership with Veritree. Each booking results in a kelp being planted, and additional contributions are made when guests forego housekeeping. This initiative, aiding in the restoration of kelp forests alongside the Sechelt First Nations, has already seen substantial ecological benefits including significant CO2 sequestration.

Hotel Las Islas in Cartagena, Colombia, focuses on coral and mangrove restoration. The hotel, in partnership with the local community and national authorities, has reintroduced a substantial number of corals and mangroves to their natural habitats, significantly aiding in ecosystem recovery and providing protective marine habitats.

andBeyond Mnemba Island in Zanzibar is a beacon of luxury and sustainability, well-known for its green sea turtle conservation efforts. The island offers unique experiences like nest monitoring, and it hosts a coral reef restoration project that cultivates and re-establishes coral colonies, aiming to enhance marine biodiversity and local fishing resources.

Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, connects guests with the Atlantic’s rich ecosystems through educational outings and sustainable practices. The resort actively engages in rewilding efforts and supports the local economy through its commitment to serving locally sourced seafood.

The Palms Hotel & Spa in Miami Beach actively supports ocean preservation through its collaborations with various foundations and initiatives, engaging guests in direct actions like beach cleanups which help foster a deeper connection with marine conservation efforts.

Coulibri Ridge in Dominica provides guests with unique marine encounters, including snorkeling with sperm whales and diving within protected marine reserves, coupled with educational efforts and direct contributions to coral restoration projects.

These examples from Beyond Green illustrate a strong, ongoing commitment to ocean conservation, highlighting the collective impact of sustainable tourism practices aimed at preserving our planet’s marine ecosystems for future generations.
