Reading Time: 2 minutesThe Walt Disney Company has launched an extensive celebration in honor of Donald Duck’s 90th anniversary. The campaign kicked off with an exclusive preview on Good Morning America, unveiling new Donald Duck-inspired products and hosting a surprise in-studio party for Donald. This multi-month event will include special activities and highlights across the company, featuring contributions from Walt Disney Animation Studios, consumer products, Disney parks, and more. A new brand spot will debut on June 9, celebrating Donald’s storytelling magic and marking his debut in the 1934 Silly Symphony short, The Wise Little Hen.
This morning’s segment on Good Morning America showcased an array of over 70 Donald Duck-themed products from more than 20 different brands, featuring well-known names such as American Tourister, Casetify, and Loungefly. Fans can look forward to additional products from top brands such as Cakeworthy, Citizen, Forever 21, GAP, PEZ, Simple Modern, and others throughout the summer.
The campaign will reflect on Donald Duck’s journey and his significant role in Disney’s storytelling legacy. Known for his relatable frustrations, Donald has become one of the world’s most beloved characters. His on-screen and off-screen achievements have garnered numerous accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and his footprints immortalized outside the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
Donald Duck has appeared in over 150 short films, more than any other Disney character. On June 9, The Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation Team will release two newly restored classic shorts directed by Disney Legend Jack Hannah on Disney+. These include Crazy Over Daisy (1950), where Donald seeks revenge on Chip and Dale for damaging his bicycle, and Out on a Limb (1950), where Donald disrupts the chipmunks’ tree home.
Additionally, Donald will star in a new short from Walt Disney Animation Studios titled D.I.Y. Duck, the first short starring Donald Duck since 1961. This short, debuting on Disney+, YouTube, Disney Channel, and Freeform, features Donald attempting home repairs that quickly escalate into comedic chaos. Directed by incoming Disney Legend Mark Henn, who is retiring in December 2023, and produced by Emmy® Award-winner Dorothy McKim, this short pays homage to Disney Legend Clarence “Ducky” Nash through archival voice recordings.
Throughout June, Tokyo Disney Resort will host “Donald’s Quacky Duck City” at Tokyo Disneyland, offering themed decorations, merchandise, food, and a special parade. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort will celebrate through July 7 with events like “Donald’s Birthday Duckling Dance,” where guests can interact with Donald, along with themed merchandise and a special castle projection show on June 9.
At the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California, Donald Duck has already begun his birthday festivities by making “quack-tastic” changes across the historic site. This includes a redesign of the Walt Disney Archives logo featuring Donald Duck, renaming Mickey Avenue to “Donald” Avenue, and various special activities and overlays.
