James Maddison has released an honest statement about the disappointment of being cut from England's Euro 2024 squad.

The Tottenham star was named in the provisional squad but will not be part of Gareth Southgate's final 26 on the plane to Germany.

Maddison will not be going to Germany and released a lengthy statement

England confirmed on Thursday that the 27-year-old and Liverpool's Curtis Jones had left the camp.

Reacting to the news on social media, Maddison conceded his form in the Premier League at the end of the season had not been at his usual level.

But he admitted he had held out hope of Southgate still keeping faith with him given he has been a mainstay of the England squad throughout Euro 2024 qualifying.

His message read: "Devastated doesn’t quite cut it. Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make.

"I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that.

"I’ll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home."

He was shown support by players who he'd been in the England camp with. Jude Bellingham reacted with a sad emoji, while Harry Maguire put a heart on the post.

Alongside Maddison and Jones, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah is expected to be one of the seven players cut.

Goalkeeper James Trafford is also likely to be the one goalkeeper dropped.

This leaves three more players who will not be in the final 26.
