‘Yeti to party?’ Apply for Aspen’s Fourth of July festivities

Fancy doing a parade float? Want a booth at the community village? Interested in nominating a grand marshal?

Aspen is currently organizing its 2024 Fourth of July festivities, which feature a parade, led by a grand marshal, a community village, and a new voting system. This year’s theme is “Yeti to Party.”

If your business or entity is interested in entering a parade float, the city is currently accepting applications. People can also apply to participate in the community garden or enter a nomination for grand marshal. The deadline is June 20.

This year, the community village will be located on the Cooper Avenue pedestrian mall and will feature local artists, small businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations. Applications can be found at https://aspenspecialevents.com/4th-of-july/ and are subject to the approval of the Fourth of July Parade and Festival Board of Directors.

For grand marshal, the person being nominated should either live or work in Aspen and have contributed to the community in an impactful way over the past years. Nominations will be reviewed by the Parade Committee and their decision will be made at the end of June.

And while the city prepares for our nation’s birth, it has unveiled a new voting method for the best parade float. In the past, the best parade float was democratically selected by a panel of judges. This year, however, the general public will have the grand opportunity of voting for best floats themselves.

“This year, the community will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite parade floats via a QR code,” said Wesy Armour-Cook, the city’s special events assistant manager. “We are excited about this new level of public involvement and are thrilled to engage with the community by having parade watchers participate.”

The voting categories include Most Patriotic, Best Theme, Most Kid-Friendly, Crowd Favorite, and Wet N’ Wild.

Snowmass lift towers being removed

Towers for the Coney Glade lift on Snowmass Mountain will be removed between 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, June 10. Removal procedures will require helicopter activity, and the flight area will be closed to the public during this time.

Aspen Skiing Company employees will be stationed  around the perimeter of the helicopter flight area to inform guests of the closure. There will also be signage at the base of the mountain and at each trail notifying the public. The following trails will be closed: Village Bound, West Government, Burlingame, Discovery and Cross Mountain.

Aspen celebrates Arbor Day on June 8

The city of Aspen parks department will host a community celebration for Arbor Day between 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, June 8.

There will be information booths with topics including tree planting, tree care, and forest updates. Cool down with Good Pops popsicles and enjoy freshly popped popcorn. Activities include a scavenger hunt, bucket truck rides, a raffle and 120 free tree giveaways with proof of Aspen residency, such as a utility bill.

Bring your family and friends to learn more about our environment and contribute to our community’s green spaces.
