Maryland tornadoes trap multiple people, cause injuries in Gaithersburg

Multiple tornadoes swept across Maryland on Wednesday, including one in Montgomery County that trapped five people in a Gaithersburg home and sent one person to the hospital with traumatic injuries, according to a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson. Tornadoes were also reported north of Leesburg, Va., and east of Baltimore. As of 10:30 p.m., the threat to the D.C. area had passed.

The Olde Towne neighborhood in Gaithersburg sustained the heaviest damage from the tornado that swept through Montgomery County, significantly damaging three homes there.
Although it will take at least until Thursday afternoon for the National Weather Service to assess the damage, this may have been among the most significant twister outbreaks in years, if not decades, in Maryland.
A supercell that developed in Loudoun County may have first produced a tornado north of Leesburg about 6:45 p.m. It went on to produce multiple tornadoes that tore through areas near Darnestown, Poolesville, Gaithersburg, Olney, Columbia and Baltimore.
