On a mission to ensure kids don’t go without meals during the summer months, JCPS serves breakfast and lunch on weekdays at dozens of sites where kids can come in and eat.In order to further bridge the divide for families who can’t come daily, this year, there are three new bulk meal distribution sites where families can pick up boxes with five breakfasts and lunches.“The two boxes is huge. The price of food went up so heavily, you know, and I can't afford the gas for one thing, every day to take them, you know, with breakfast and at lunch it's just not feasible. It's not feasible,” said Leilana Lavell. But with this new program came new unforeseen problems. Lavell is one of the many people who showed up on day one, leaving empty-handed because the sites were out of meals less than 30 minutes after the sites opened.“Everybody's just rolling in, and there's just nothing for anybody. You know, a lot of kids are going hungry,” Lavell said. Each site gave out 180 boxes with plans on increasing the number next week after the demand outweighed the supply. “We underestimated the need a little bit. We thought we were doing fantastic with the number (of meals) we prepared, and we ran out within 25 minutes, So we're going to double that number next week, and we're also exploring ways we can even get those numbers up higher, “ said executive administrator of JCPS Nutrition Services, Terina Edington.Lavell said with times being hard, she hopes the district can come up with a solution that will help the need at hand. “There's parents that's going to be sitting out here next week. They're going to be out there in the parking lots at five or 6:00 in the morning with their kids in the car. If there's more than two that they need it for, you know, because people are desperate. You know. The price of food gone up and everything else,” Lavell said. JCPS officials are urging parents if their children needs a meal this week, try to make it to one of their 40 plus daily walk-in sites.
