Arvada crews are battling a fire burning in a storage unit building just off Interstate 70 Tuesday morning.

Fire officials first announced crews were at the scene of a working structure fire near I-70 and Carr Street at 6:25 a.m. Tuesday on social media.

One of Arvada’s StorQuest Self Storage locations sits at the intersection of an I-70 frontage road and Carr Street. StorQuest’s signage could also be seen in multiple photos posted by the Arvada fire department Tuesday morning.

Heavy smoke from the fire is blowing across the interstate — especially near Wadsworth Boulevard — causing low visibility and slowing traffic, according to the Arvada Police Department. Drivers should plan for a longer morning commute or take alternate routes.

Firefighters from the Fairmount Fire Protection District and West Metro Fire Rescue joined Arvada crews on the defense, Arvada officials said in a 7:08 a.m. update.

Information about the cause of the fire, potential damages and when the blaze will be doused was not available Tuesday.
