The Washington Nationals on Tuesday placed Trevor Williams on the 15-day injured list with a right flexor muscle strain, interrupting what had been a strong season for the right-hander, who has pitched to a 2.22 ERA in 11 starts. The move is retroactive to June 1.
Williams — who signed a two-year, $13 million deal with the Nationals in December 2022 — hits the injured list in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career, one in which he has transformed himself into a legitimate trade candidate for rebuilding Washington.
He now joins Josiah Gray, Washington’s Opening Day starter, on the IL. The right-hander was placed on the injured list in April with a strained right flexor muscle. Gray has been working his way back; he threw a live bullpen session this past Thursday and is expected to throw one Tuesday. Nationals Manager Dave Martinez has said that the team would like the 26-year-old to start a rehab assignment if Tuesday’s session goes well.
Herz, 23, was traded to the Nationals this past July, one of two prospects sent to Washington when the club dealt third baseman Jeimer Candelario to the Chicago Cubs. The left-hander, whose Vulcan change-up has raised his profile in the minors, has pitched to a 3.75 ERA in nine starts for the Red Wings. He struck out 10 in his last start with Rochester, which came this past Thursday.
