YOU CAN SEE ALLIGATORS, MANATEES OR EVEN A DOLPHIN IF YOU'RE LUCKY. BUT IN SOUTHEAST CAPE NEIGHBORS ARE SEEING SOMETHING THEY NEVER EXPECTED. DID YOU EVER THINK LIVING IN CAPE CORAL YOU WOULD SEE OLYMPIC ATHLETE PRACTICE IN BACK DOOR? ABSOLUTELY. THIS IS FERNANDO, JORGE, AND HE'S AN OLYMPIC CHAMPION. CANOEIST. >> THE CUBAN NATIVE COMPETED IN THE RIO OLYMPICS AND WON GOLD IN TOKYO IN JULY. FERNANDO WILL BE THE FIRST CUBAN TO EVER COMPETE ON THE REFUGEE OLYMPIC TEAM. WANT TO GO TO ME. HE JUST CAME DOWN. HE KIND OF STOPPED. HE WOULD JUST GLIDING AND LOOK AT HIM. AND SHOW WHEN THEN WHEN HE GOT BACK, HE TAKES A MISSING MAN. THANK YOU SO MUCH. IN THE WHITE HAT. South Florida's 400 miles of canals are home to all kinds of creatures. From the comfort of your lanai, you can see alligators, manatees or even a dolphin if you're lucky. In southeast Cape Coral, neighbors are seeing something they never expected — an Olympic gold medalist.Fernando Jorge is an Olympic champion canoeist. The Cuba native competed in the Rio Olympics and won gold in Tokyo. In July, Fernando will be the first Cuban to ever compete on the IOC Refugee Olympic Team."My story is a little complicated. I had to have the courage to leave my country because of a lot of problems there. So, in 2021, I came to the U.S. and I lived in Miami for two years. Then, I moved to Cape Coral," Jorge said.Sister station WBBH NBC2 rode alongside Jorge's first training session of the day, a brisk 10-kilometer paddle. Jorge's Olympic event is only 1 kilometer. After this, he will hit the gym and then come back for another canoe session. That's his schedule five days a week."I'm always tired," Jorge said.Watching Jorge train brought so much joy to neighbor Juan Ortiz Lopez, he wanted to do something special for him. So, he bought a ton of Olympic flags and convinced his neighbors to hang them up at their docks. He said when Jorge first saw them — he got emotional."He just came down and he kinda stopped. He was just gliding and looked at and then he choked," Lopez said. "When he got back, he texted me, 'Man thank you so much. Nobody has ever done something like that.'"Jorge said he appreciated all of the support."I like it a lot. I feel loved by all the people when I'm training," he said.
