Young baseball players in town will have the opportunity to learn from the town’s best at the Youth Sailors Baseball Camp from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, at Emerald Park Baseball Fields on 900 Pamela Lane.
The camp is hosted by local baseball coaches Matt Anaya and Kellen Baker, along with high school varsity players in town, and is offered to players age 7-13.
Anaya said the main focus of the camp is to keep youth players interested in the sport, and to teach the right ways to play and have fun at a young age. He has seen the way the sport has positively impacted players, and hopes to bring that to Routt County.
“The camp is to work on fundamentals, mechanics and help develop these youngsters to keep them in the funnel,” Anaya said. He added that it is a great opportunity for him to get to know the younger players as they rise up through the ranks of the sport.
At the camp, players can expect to learn techniques across all disciplines within the sport revolving around defense, hitting and base running. The day will conclude with a home run derby competition.
According to Anaya, the players from the high school team will help run some of the drills and host stations throughout the day. He believes it is a great chance for the younger players to learn from high school role models and see what level they can reach if they stick to the sport long term.
Anaya hopes to expand the camp this fall and into next spring as interest in baseball continues to grow.
Space for the camp is limited and registration runs through June 10, giving Anaya enough time to order Youth Sailors Baseball Camp jerseys — which will be provided, along with lunch, for each participant in the camp.
The camp costs $75 and participants can be signed up through tinyurl.com/mrz8crhw.

“Hopefully the community buys into it,” Anaya said. “It looks like they are.”
