How Limerick mayoral battle is a litmus test for fundamental change

If this ‘national experiment’ in directly electing a mayor works, it could transform the face of local government

The city’s Latin motto – “Urbs antiqua fuit studisque in asperrmia belli” – tells us much about Limerick politics.

Translated as “an ancient city well-versed in the art of war,” it reminds us that local politics here is not for the faint-hearted.
