The Middle East region has demonstrated impressive recovery rates, experiencing a surge in international tourist arrivals that have exceeded pre-pandemic levels by 20%. This robust recovery highlights the region’s resilience and attractiveness as a travel destination. Enhanced travel policies, improved infrastructure, and diverse tourism offerings have contributed to this significant increase.

In a recent update, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has achieved a significant milestone in the Travel and Tourism Development Index, published by the World Economic Forum. The UAE secured the top spot in the Middle East and North Africa region and ranked 18th globally. This remarkable achievement reflects a 4.4% increase in its score compared to the 2021 edition, propelling the UAE seven places higher in the global ranking.

The index, which comprises 119 economies, evaluates various factors across five sub-indices: enabling environment, travel and tourism policy, infrastructure and services, natural and cultural resources, and sustainability within the travel and tourism sector. It serves as a vital strategic tool for businesses, governments, and international organizations, aiding in the development of the travel and tourism industry.

The United States leads the index, followed by Spain and Japan, maintaining their positions from the previous edition. Notably, the UAE and Saudi Arabia are the only two high-income economies in the top ten, demonstrating significant improvements in their performance between 2019 and 2024.

The report forecasts a global tourism industry rebound, surpassing pre-crisis levels, driven by heightened demand, expanded flight options, enhanced international accessibility, and increased investments in natural and cultural attractions.
