The Weld County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating after a Milliken police officer shot a man early Monday morning.

Police say the man made threatening statements toward law enforcement and charged the officer with a knife before the officer fired his weapon.

Just before 1:30 a.m., Milliken police responded to a report of a suspicious person near Milliken Elementary School. Before arriving, an officer spoke on the phone with the man — later identified as 18-year-old Colin Brixius of Milliken — who police say made multiple threatening statements toward law enforcement, according to a release from the Critical Incident Response Team.

When the officer arrived, police say, Brixius ran at the officer with a knife. The officer tried to tase Brixius then fired his gun at him when the Taser was unsuccessful, according to the release.

The release did not specify how many shots the officer fired but said Brixius was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds and is expected to survive.

When medically cleared, Brixius will be taken to Weld County Jail. Police say he will face charges of first-degree assault and felony menacing.

The Weld County Critical Incident Response Team is handling the investigation, led by Greeley Police Detective Jackson Brunmeier. Police ask anyone with information to contact Brunmeier at 970-351-5352.

The investigation is active, and more details will be released as they become available, according to the release. For further questions, police say to call Lt. Kevin Halloran with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office at 970-400-2837 or Chief Investigator Mike Prill with the District Attorney’s Office at 970-400-4722.
