Gardaí suspect man (46) found dead in Monaghan home was victim of ‘sustained and vicious’ assault

The victim is originally from eastern Europe and gardaí have identified a chief suspect

Gardai are expected to launch a homicide investigation into the death of a 46-year-old man whose body was discovered in a property in Clones, Co Monaghan shortly after 10pm on Saturday.

It is suspected that the victim who is originally from eastern Europe was the victim of a sustained and vicious assault.

One line of investigation is that he may have suffered a heart attack after being attacked in a flat in The Diamond area of the border town.

No arrests have been made but sources say that a chief suspect has been identified.

Gardai were alerted to the fatal incident by ambulance personnel who had responded to an emergency call.

“The victim in this case suffered a very bad beating and the scene was fairly harrowing when emergency services arrived at the property,” a source said.

The body remains at the scene which is preserved for a technical examination due to take place today.

“Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body in Clones, Co Monaghan on the night of Saturday, June 1,” a Garda spokesperson told the Irish Independent.

“A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.”
