Outside the club, a gaggle of men lingered near the door as they tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade the female bouncer to let them in. “Come on, just for a minute!” one implored. But the bouncer, firm and unyielding, just shook her head. As I approached the entrance, the bouncer stepped aside and let me pass easily. The reason I was granted entry was simple: I’m a woman.
This was The Girl’s Room Y2K event in the Workman’s Cellar on Dublin’s Essex Street , a night dedicated to fun and freedom, without the presence of men. Tonight, for €15 a ticket, everywhere was the women’s bathroom on a night out: safe, supportive, and a trove for unfailingly understanding, albeit fleeting, friendships.
