The final stage of the country’s most popular spelling challenge, the Scripps National Spelling Bee, is underway. During the third and final round, four of eight young finalists remain to battle for the championship trophy and a $50,000 prize.

The evening’s three rounds focus on spelling, vocabulary and then spelling again. If there’s no winner with five minutes remaining, the participants will vie in a spell-off for the crown.

This year’s group of finalists is the smallest field the competition has seen in years. Since the bee resumed after its 2020 pandemic pause, there have not been fewer than 11 finalists, according to Scripps officials, though the competition structure changed somewhat in 2021.
