Teen passenger in stolen car dies after chase, crash

A teenager died and a man was arrested after a high-speed chase involving a stolen car ended in a crash on U.S. Highway 301 in Cumberland County early Thursday morning.

At about 1:30 a.m., officers with the Fayetteville Police Department spotted a white Hyundai Sonata that had been reported stolen in Fayetteville.

Police said officers were attempting to pull over the car when the driver fled the scene. As officers were chasing the Hyundai south on U.S. Highway 301, it swerved into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a black Hyundai SUV near Tom Starling Road just outside the Fayetteville city limits.

Police radio traffic from Broadcastify shows officers reported the vehicle reached speeds of up to 115 mph.

"This car is gonna hurt somebody," one officer said.

There were three people inside the stolen white Hyundai. Aisa Holliday, 16, died in the crash. The driver, Donovan Jaheim Rozier, 21, of Fayetteville, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, driving without a license, reckless driving and speeding among other charges. He was being held at the Cumberland County jail on $200,000 bond.

Rozier and another man from the stolen car were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

The driver of the black that was hit was not seriously injured but was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for evaluation.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal collision. The Fayetteville Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit will investigate the actions of the officers in chasing the fleeing car.

Part of Tom Starling Road was closed but has since reopened.
