T20 World Cup: These players have led in most matches
The 2024 Men's ICC T20 World Cup will be underway on June 1 in the Caribbean and USA. Over the years, several players have led their sides from the front in the mega ICC tournament. Notably, Mahendra Singh Dhoni owns the most match-wins while leading a side in the tournament. Here are the players to have led in most T20 World Cup matches.
MS Dhoni: 33 matches
A long-haired Ranchi boy, Dhoni led India to their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2007. The ground-breaking achievement started a wave of T20 cricket. Dhoni went on to lead India in five other T20 World Cup campaigns thereafter. Under him, India won 21 and lost 11 matches. Dhoni remains the only player to have led in over 30 T20 WC matches (33).
Daren Sammy: 18 matches
Interestingly, no player other than Dhoni has even led in 20 T20 World Cup matches. West Indies' Daren Sammy follows Dhoni with 18 such appearances. Sammy was at the helm when WI won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. This made WI the first-ever side to win multiple T20 World Cup honors. Overall, WI won 12 and lost five games under Sammy.
Kane Williamson: 17 matches
Like Dhoni, New Zealand's Kane Williamson is known for his astute captaincy across formats. Between 2016 and 2022, the latter led the Kiwis to 12 wins in 17 T20 World Cup matches. They lost five games under his leadership. NZ were the runners-up of the 2021 edition as they lost the final to Australia.
Paul Collingwood: 17 matches
Paul Collingwood led England in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. Three years later, England won the title (2010) in an emphatic manner under his leadership. They defeated arch-rivals Australia in the final in Bridgetown. Collingwood, a former all-rounder, overall played 17 T20 World Cup matches as England's captain, having won eight and lost as many.
