A Seymour man died in a house fire on Memorial Day, but his girlfriend is recovering after being rescued by police. Jonathan "Shorty" White, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene, while family members of Teresa Machino say she is recovering from smoke inhalation at Schneck Medical Center.Two Seymour Police Department officers happened to be in the area when they saw White's house burning, said Seymour Police Chief Greg O'Brien.The two officers, Sam Hughes and Joe Fagan, went into the burning home, found Machino close to the entrance and were able to help her leave the house, O'Brien said."She didn't want to leave him (White) behind," O'Brien said. "So she was trying to get him but the smoke was just overtaking her."Neighbors told WLKY News White was paralyzed on one side of his body after suffering a stroke some years ago.When the officers went back into the home to get White, the ceiling collapsed and blocked their way, O'Brien said. Neighbors said White was well-known in the area."He was a very sweet man," said Tabitha Hitchcock. "Before he had his stroke he would come over and hang out with us when we would have barbecues and little fires in the backyard. And then after his stroke, my husband and I and a few neighbors, we would go over and tend to his lawn and see things that he needed."

Neighbors told WLKY News White was paralyzed on one side of his body after suffering a stroke some years ago.
When the officers went back into the home to get White, the ceiling collapsed and blocked their way, O'Brien said.
