Flooding due to a hailstorm and heavy rain late Wednesday night required the closure of U.S. 34 west of Colo. 257 as well as sections of 9th and 10th streets in downtown Greeley.

Greeley police posted on social media about the closure of U.S. 34 from Weld County Road 17 to Colo. 257, advising drivers to avoid the area and not to attempt to drive through the water.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Greeley, Garden City and Gill until 2 a.m. The city posted on social media about flooding in east Greeley, noting emergency services are prioritizing life and safety calls.

The city has also opened a temporary shelter at the Greeley Family FunPlex, 1501 65th Ave., encouraging anyone who needs shelter to head there. To avoid flooded roads, the city recommends taking 20th Street to 65th Avenue or 16th Street to 71st Avenue.

Drivers are advised to turn around if they see flood waters and not to attempt to drive through high-water areas. The city listed the following roads as being affected:

  • 9th and 10th streets closed from 10th to 14th avenues
  • 11th Avenue from 8th to 11th streets
  • 8th Avenue from 10th to 12th streets

The National Weather Service reported at 11:51 p.m. the storms were on the way out of the Greeley area, but hail accumulations will continue to limit the draining capacity, causing lingering flooding and roads that can’t be passed.

The severe thunderstorm and hail affected Greeley, Evans and Johnstown, with golf ball-sized hail reported in downtown Johnstown.
