The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has initiated a renovation project for the Senator Dianne Feinstein International Terminal. Starting this week, travelers will notice sections of the terminal’s west-facing façade enclosed in shrink-wrapped scaffolding, with the work planned in four stages and expected to conclude by early 2026.
This renovation involves replacing the roof, installing new solar panels, and refurbishing various aging exterior components such as the structural steel, expansion joints, window-washing systems, and curtain wall mullion caps. The construction budget for this project is set at $75 million, with $31 million funded by the federal government under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
During each phase, while scaffolding encloses specific work areas, access to the terminal will be maintained through the main revolving doors, although side doors within the scaffolding sections will be closed. Additionally, the nearest roadway lane to the terminal will be shut to vehicles, creating a safe walkway for passengers around the construction site. Areas of the terminal not affected by scaffolding will operate as usual.
Since its inauguration in December 2000, the Senator Dianne Feinstein International Terminal has become the largest international terminal in North America, handling over 250 million passengers. Developed as part of a Master Plan approved by the Airport Commission in 1992 and breaking ground in October 1995, the $2.6 billion construction was North America’s largest construction and public works project at the time. Notably, even after 24 years, it remains the largest structure worldwide built on base isolators, offering enhanced earthquake protection.
