On this date in 1953, Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to summit Mount Everest, the world tallest mountain, at 29,029 feet.

1) K2/Karakoram (28,251 feet): The world’s second highest peak was first scaled by an Italian team led by Ardito Desio in 1954.

2) Kangchenjunga (28,169 feet): World’s third highest peak was scaled in 1955 by a British expedition led by Charles Evans.

3) Lhotse (27,940 feet): Everest’s Himalayan neighbor was summited by a Swiss team in 1956.

4) Makalu (27,838 feet): Fifth-highest in the world, one of the most isolated of the Himalayan peaks. Climbed in 1955 by a French expedition.
