Beginning June 13, 2024, travelers arriving at Mfuwe International Airport will observe extensive construction activities as Zambia Airports Corporation LTD (ZACL) launches upgrades and enhancements. ZACL anticipates the infrastructure work to span approximately three months during the dry season.

Key areas of focus include:

  1. Pavement improvements for the runway, taxiway, and apron.
  2. Upgrading the outdated ground lighting system.
  3. Rebuilding the inner perimeter fence.
  4. Extending the terminal building.

These enhancements aim to boost safety, operational efficiency, reliability, and the capacity to accommodate a growing number of passengers visiting South Luangwa.

Initially, ZACL had planned to temporarily close Mfuwe International for the project. However, Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali directed that the airport must remain operational to avoid disruptions during the peak tourism season.

If all progresses as scheduled, the construction should wrap up by September 2024, aligning with the onset of summer rains around November.
