Dr. Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, Governor of South Sharqiyah, announced that the governorate is embarking on numerous development and tourism projects, including the establishment of two new waterfronts in the Al Ashkharah area and Jaalan Bani Bu Ali. These projects are expected to bolster domestic tourism and stimulate commercial activities in the region.
The governorate is actively working on these waterfront projects, with a tender already awarded for the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali project and the bidding process soon to begin for the Al Ashkharah project. Dr. Maawali highlighted the governorate’s commitment to developing tourism infrastructure, which also includes the construction of parks and other amenities.
As of December 2022, 25 heritage and tourism projects have been identified, with a total confirmed and planned investment projected to reach RO90.51 million by 2025. This significant investment underlines the region’s dedication to becoming a premier tourist destination. The governorate’s average summer temperature remains below 30°C, making it an attractive travel destination year-round.
In 2021 and 2022, South Sharqiyah invested RO13.336 million in various development projects, with an additional RO4.347 million allocated in 2023. These initiatives are in line with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes sustainable and balanced development across all governorates.
To further support domestic tourism and diversify recreational activities, South Sharqiyah will host events such as a surfing championship in mid-August. The first surfing championship, held in 2022 in Ras al Hadd in the wilayat of Sur, successfully promoted the culture of surfing among the community, particularly young people, and attracted surfers and watersports enthusiasts from within and outside Oman. This event highlighted the region’s beaches as prime locations for watersports, especially during the monsoon season.
These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance South Sharqiyah’s tourism sector. The region has made remarkable strides in improving infrastructure and public amenities, and these new projects are expected to further enhance its appeal as a tourist destination.
For travelers planning their itineraries, these developments mean more options and improved facilities, making South Sharqiyah an even more attractive destination for both adventure seekers and those looking to explore Oman’s rich heritage.
