Two bodies were found inside a burning car that crashed early Monday at 1300 N. Alameda St. in Wilmington.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call around 2:13 a.m. and quickly extinguished flames engulfing the vehicle, according to the department’s Public Information Officer Nicholas Prange. Firefighters were unable to identify the age or gender of the two deceased occupants or determine if they were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, he added.

The incident was referred to the Los Angeles Police Department, and officials said the investigation is being handled by the LAPD’s South Traffic Division.

“A vehicle with two occupants crashed into a center median,” said LAPD Lt. Michelle Loomis.

“They were likely trapped or unconscious when the car caught fire and succumbed to injuries in the car because of flames.”

Detectives plan to review any available footage of the car, a Nissan Murano, prior to the collision and are awaiting information from the LA County Coroner on the identities of the two occupants, said LAPD Sgt. Clarence Perkins.
