It’s often described as one of the largest and most moving Memorial Day commemorations in the state.

Green Hills Memorial Park’s Memorial Day Service once again brought a large crowd to Rancho Palos Verdes to honor those who died during active military duty, those impacted by those deaths and those who are serving in U.S. Armed Forces today.

As active military members who were bused in from Fleet Week events in the Port of Los Angeles looked on, Green Hills put on a display that included sky divers, flyovers, a mounted posse and patriotic music.

The keynote speaker at the event — retired Major Gen. Mark A. Graham — knows too well the impact losing a loved one who’s serving in the military can have. Graham lost two sons who were in the Army: One was killed by an improvised explosive device in Iraq in 2004 and another died by suicide in 2003. The major general and his wife, Carol, now work to dispel the stigma surrounding mental health care, according to the family’s website.

Graham, with nearly 35 years of military service, works as the executive director at Rutgers Univeristy’s Behavioral Health Care National Call Center and Vets4Warriors.
