    What's the story

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the arrival of the much-anticipated southwest monsoon in Kerala on May 31. The IMD's bulletin stated, "Southwest Monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of ±4days." This forecast has sparked anticipation for monsoon rains across different parts of India. Amidst severe heatwave conditions, Delhi recorded high temperatures of 48.3 degrees Celsius on Monday, with reports suggesting monsoons expected around June 27.

    Monsoon arrival

Mumbai and Bengaluru await rainfall dates

According to reports, Mumbai is likely to experience the onset of monsoon rains from June 10, as reported by an IMD official. The monsoon has already entered Andaman and is expected to reach Mumbai between June 10 and 11. To recall, last year's monsoon was delayed by two weeks due to Cyclone Biparjoy. Meanwhile, Bengaluru is predicted to witness the onset of monsoons by June 13 or 14, according to a meteorologist at IMD Bengaluru, reports said.

    Weather update

West Bengal braces for rainfall post cyclone

West Bengal, currently recovering from the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, can expect monsoons between June 10 and 29. According to Head of Regional Meteorological Centre, HR Biswas,"The prediction so far is normal onset of monsoon both in Kerala and Andaman. We can predict its arrival only after it hits Kerala." On Sunday night, the severe cyclonic storm "Remal" made landfall between the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal, with winds reaching up to 135 kmph.

    Remal weakens

    Cyclone Remal gradually weakening: IMD

Cyclone Remal made landfall at 8:30pm on Sunday, impacting the coastal areas between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh, southwest of Mongla. The cyclone has caused extensive damage and disruption, leading to the evacuation of nearly a million people over the past two days. According to the IMD, Remal began moving northwards and gradually weakening on Monday.

    Preparedness

    Emergency meetings ahead of landfall

Earlier on Sunday, before landfall, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting to assess readiness for Cyclone Remal in the North Bay of Bengal. West Bengal Governor Ananda Bose had also conducted an emergency review meeting on the cyclone. On Monday morning, Governor Bose led the Rapid Action Force of Raj Bhavan to areas affected by Remal. Teams from the Kolkata Municipality and Kolkata Police Disaster Management are also actively clearing uprooted trees in the Alipore area.
