After exiting day one of the D.C. State Athletic Association track and field championship with a slight lead, the St. John’s boys were trailing early Thursday and in danger of fumbling away a state championship.

But the Cadets stormed back over the course of the second afternoon at Dunbar, and by the time the gun sounded for the 4x100 relay — the meet’s second-to-last event — the program’s monopoly over this event was secure. The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference program took first place in both the men’s and women’s outdoor championships for the fourth consecutive year.
