In a bid to enhance travel and tourism, West Midlands Railway has announced that it will double the number of trains running between Birmingham and Shrewsbury on weekdays and Saturdays. This new timetable, set to commence on June 2, aims to improve connectivity and make train travel more appealing to both local residents and tourists.
West Midlands Railway’s new timetable will see an increase in train frequency between key locations, making travel more convenient and efficient. However, it will also result in some changes to direct connections.
Andrew McGill from West Midlands Railway highlighted that this is the first significant service increase since the pandemic. The company hopes that by providing more frequent services, they will encourage more people to use the railway, particularly for leisure trips, which have already surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
Despite the positive changes, some areas will experience longer journey times. The new timetable does not include direct connections from Smethwick Galton Bridge to Bilbrook, Codsall, Albrighton, Cosford, and Oakengates, which may inconvenience some passengers.
Andrew McGill expressed optimism that the increased number of trains would entice more passengers back to the railway. He noted that the leisure travel segment is showing strong recovery, and the company aims to capitalize on this trend by offering more frequent and faster services.
The new timetable includes stops at Tame Bridge Parkway, aligning with plans to open new stations at Willenhall and Darlaston. These developments are part of a broader strategy to improve regional connectivity and support economic growth through enhanced rail services.
West Midlands Railway’s decision to double the number of trains between Birmingham and Shrewsbury is a strategic move to enhance travel and tourism in the region. By offering more frequent and faster services, the company aims to attract more passengers, boost local economies, and promote sustainable travel. While some routes will experience longer journey times, the overall increase in connectivity is expected to have a positive impact on tourism and travel.
