It may feel like summer in Grand County, but at over 12,183 feet, winter conditions still exist. Due to ongoing and forecasted winter weather conditions at higher elevations in Rocky Mountain National Park, Trail Ridge Road will not be opening this Memorial Day weekend. Park snowplow operators have been plowing Trail Ridge Road since mid-April. May storms brought significant winds at higher elevations have hampered snow plowing operations.  Through mid-May, plow operators have encountered additional snow accumulation, significant wind resulting in deep snow drifts, freezing cold temperatures and ice.

Those traveling through Rocky should note current vehicle closure points on Trail Ridge Road are at Colorado River Trailhead on the west side and Many Parks Curve on the east side.

Pedestrians and bicyclists on the road should prepare for high wind gusts, snow accumulation, deep drifted snow and ice above the tree line.
