Each year, the Rocky Mountain Lift Association recognizes one person who made significant contributions to the ski lift industry in an unselfish and devoted way. Earlier this month, at the RMLA’s annual conference, the award was presented to Deb Werner.
Werner is the director of lift operations at Steamboat Resort and has been part of the ski lift industry for 52 years. The award, named after Bob Lesage, is only given to those that exhibit commitment and expertise to the promotion of the industry. Lesage was known for his innovation and dedication to improving ski lift safety and overall operations.
“Deb’s passion and dedication to the industry is apparent in everything she does, and I couldn’t think of a more deserving individual for this award,” said Dave Hunter, interim resort lead for Steamboat Resort, in a news release. “Steamboat continues to provide the best experience for our guests by cultivating one of the best working environments in the industry. We are honored to have Deb as one of our leaders, who has continually raised the bar for excellence not only for our guests, but for our employees as well.”
Werner’s focus has been on improving operations for the resort’s lifts and continuously boosting the overall guest experience. She oversees the resort’s network of lift operations and around 200 employees.
Werner most recently had the opportunity to witness the unveiling of the resort’s most recent lift additions, Wild Blue Gondola and Mahogany Ridge.
On top of the Bob Lesage Award, Werner has also been recognized as the 2016 Hazie Werner Award winner, a testament to her character and pursuit of excellence in everything she does.
“Deb’s leadership, technical expertise and commitment to mentorship have made her a standout figure in our industry,” continued Hunter. “Her impact extends beyond our organization, positively influencing countless individuals and shaping industry standards. The impact she has had on the ski resort and the entire community will be remembered for years to come.”
Werner formerly served on the Colorado Mountain College Ski Area Operations Advisory Committee and the board of directors for Community Agriculture Alliance. She is married to Steamboat native Loris “Bugs” Werner.
Other Steamboat recipients of the Bob Lesage Award include — Doug Allen, 2014; Ted Serafy, 2013; Derek Fritz, 2013; Mark Emergy, 2011; Frank Fidler, 2009.
