An attempted robbery in Brookline, Massachusetts, was thwarted by a vigilant homeowner and a rapid police response, resulting in the arrest of two suspects.
"We have a caller on the line, he said he can hear them in the back of the house and he can them climbing the back," was the 911 call that set the events in motion.
The suspects, masked and one armed with a loaded pistol, were attempting to break into a house, a scene reminiscent of a "Mission Impossible" movie.
"I don't know that somebody brings a gun to break into somebody's house without at least considering that they might use it so in this case it's good that we won't find out," said Paul Campbell, Brookline police deputy superintendent.
The suspects' plan was foiled by the quick-thinking homeowner who spotted them on his surveillance camera after they triggered the motion detection lights in the backyard. The homeowner promptly called 911.
Within seconds, Brookline officers responded. One of the robbers slipped right into police custody, and the second suspect was also captured.
"He did a great job, he was calm, he was clear and he didn't tip off the suspects that we were on the way and they tried to run but they didn't get far," Campbell praised the homeowner.
Once the suspects' hoods and masks were removed, police identified them as Mounssif Fellahi and Akram Boudhan. They are facing several charges, including attempted breaking and entering and illegal possession of a firearm.
"This is a good day, I'm guessing there were a lot of happy people," Campbell said.
"It's nice to catch the bad guys and you're there to protect the residents of Brookline and I think most of them are real happy to get a call like that and have it work out the way that it did," Campbell added.
The incident underscores the importance of alertness and quick response in preventing potential crimes.
"In a situation like this it's better to call us sooner, rather than later," Campbell advised.
Fellahi is being held on a $10,000 bail, while Boudhan is held without bail pending a hearing on Thursday.
