Linn Grove Cemetery will host its Memorial Day service next week, followed later in the week with a celebration of the Greeley cemetery’s 150th anniversary.
The Memorial Day service starts at 9 a.m. Monday at the cemetery, 1700 Cedar Ave., and features dedications, tributes, honor guard ceremonies, a benediction and a 21-gun salute.
Jim Burack, a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel, will deliver the keynote address. Burack serves as the deputy director of Colorado’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, the city will host the 150th anniversary celebration at the cemetery. The event will feature presentations from the Daughters of the Revolution, Veterans MIA/KIA and Greeley Mayor John Gates.
“For 150 years, Linn Grove has served as a final resting place for veterans and residents of our community. It is one of Colorado’s oldest, fully operating, and still expanding cemeteries,” Gates said in a news release. “It is an honor to commemorate this sacred site.”
The process of placing an American flag on the graves of veterans in the cemetery started Monday, but volunteer groups are still needed to complete it this week. Volunteer hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Saturday. Call (970) 350-9386 to coordinate volunteer groups of 20 or more. Volunteers will place 2,000 flags, according to the release.
