All proceeds from your donation goes to veterans and their families. The poppy donations received are distributed as follows: The Unit cost of the poppies covers the supplies needed to make the poppies.
The Veterans who make poppies in the Poppy Shop at Zablocki VA Medical Facility are paid a small stipend for each poppy they make. Making the poppies is part of their Rehabilitation Program.
After the cost of the poppies is subtracted, 20% of the donations is forwarded to the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Wisconsin – Portage. The 20% is used by the Department of Wisconsin to fund Veteran’s Rehabilitation and Children and Youth Programs. 80% remains with the Unit to be distributed to local programs for the Veterans and their families. Poppy distribution donations are deposited into the Rehabilitation Fund and are used solely for veterans/families.
Funds are used at the local level to purchase Local grocery store gift cards given to Veterans and their families at Thanksgiving/Christmas for the purchase of food for the holiday meal. Veterans/families are identified by the Waushara County Service Officer. Monetary donations are given to WI Veteran’s Home at King, Camp American Legion, The Veterans & Family Assistance Fund, Homeless Female Veterans Grant Fund, Veterans Rehabilitation Programs, Children and Youth Programs, Veterans Creative Arts Festival (Serves as rehabilitation for veterans), Department Scholarships and Wisconsin Child Welfare Fund.
