    What's the story

Bluesky, the open-source social media service, has introduced a direct messaging feature. This new addition allows users to send text messages directly to other individuals on the platform. Currently, this feature only supports text-based chats between users. However, Bluesky has future plans to expand this functionality to include images, videos, and group messaging capabilities.

    How to use it?

To send a direct message on Bluesky, users can select the chat icon at the bottom of their mobile screen, or click on the chat bubble in the sidebar on desktop. After initiating a new chat, users can search for the person they wish to message, compose their text, and hit send. By default, Bluesky allows any user you follow to message you, but this setting can be adjusted in the settings menu. You can also enable/disable message notification sounds.

    Safety

    Privacy and security measures

Bluesky's direct messages are not currently end-to-end encrypted, but the company plans to support this security measure in the future. Until then, Bluesky may need to access users' messages when it is "absolutely necessary," such as during an investigation into spam or harassment. The company assures that such access is "extremely limited and tracked internally." Users also have the option to report direct messages and block other users from within their messages.

    Platform development

    Efforts to enhance user experience

Since discontinuing its invite system in February, Bluesky has been progressively adding new features. These include allowing users to host their own servers and open-sourcing its content moderation tool. The company also has other facilities on the roadmap, such as 90-second videos and improved anti-harassment tools. This is part of Bluesky's ongoing commitment to provide a user-friendly and secure social media platform for its users.
