A report that turned out to be false led state troopers to pull over a vehicle at gunpoint on Interstate 70 in Summit County on Wednesday, May 22, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Around noon, dispatch in Vail received a report from a caller claiming that the occupants of a Mazda with Utah plates were flashing a gun at other vehicles and recording the other drivers’ reactions on a phone, Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Patrick Rice said.
Troopers caught up with the vehicle on I-70 eastbound and followed it until there was a safe place to stop it, Rice said. A little after 12:20 p.m., he said law enforcement officers performed a “high-risk stop,” which by protocol involves officers drawing their weapons to remove the occupants of the vehicle.
The 82-year-old man driving the vehicle was briefly detained, but no weapons were found inside the Mazda, Rice said. He was released. When the State Patrol reached back out to the person who originally reported the situation, they said they weren’t even sure that what they saw was a gun, he said.
“Much to do over nothing as it ends up,” Rice said.
